Jorge I. Dominguez is a writer and publisher who graduated from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, with a PhD in political science in 1972. Over the years, Jorge Dominguez has written articles, books, and research publications focused on various topics. However, his most famous works focused on Cuba.

The United States and Cuba have a complex relationship with one another since 1959. Fidel Castro overthrew a US-backed government and created a socialist one. It allied itself with the Soviet Union. In July 2021, the US sanctioned Cuba following the aggressive Cuban government response to citizens who protested against the lack of food items and medicine after the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, some positive improvements have occurred. In May 2023, Cuba eased the restrictions placed on its citizens residing in foreign countries, affecting Cubans living in the US. According to information from the US Customs and Border Patrol, over 300,000 Cubans arrived at America’s border in 2022.

In May 2023, US officials announced that the country would ease sanctions placed on Cuba by the Trump administration. The eased sanctions removed the limit on the amount Cubans in the US can send to their families in Cuba and sped up processing time for US visas for Cuban citizens.
